Backing up a DVD to Standard-Def Blu-ray BD-9.

At some point, you'll probably want to backup your unencrypted DVD to blu-ray BD-9 format in Standard Def. (720x480 for NTSC). This article will show you how.

Tools needed:

This tutorial will require the following tools be installed and set up:

Parsing the VOB

Its always easier to process a DVD if you've saved it as a single VOB file. There are many articles on the web explaining how to do this with various tools, such as DVDShrink, so we won't go into that here. For this tutorial, we'll be using a single VOB file located at M:\VIDEO.VOB.

The first thing we'll do is open the VOB file with DGIndex. Launch DGIndex, and select File->Open (or press F2.):

Browse to where you have your VOB file (in our case M:\) and select the VOB file. The 'File List' window will pop up:

Just click on 'OK' here, and you'll be returned to the DGIndex main window. (Although it will most likely have resized.)

Hit F4 to save the audio and create the .d2v file. You should save it in a local directory, in our case C:\DVD2BR:

Once you click on 'Save', DGIndex will immediately start parsing the VOB file, and dump the audio and d2v files into the location you specified. Once its done, the information window will look something like this:

In our case, we note that the Video Type was 99% Film and the Aspect Ratio was 16:9. We'll need to remember this for later.

You can now close DGIndex. Your save location should look similar to ours:
